As some of you may already know, I’m preparing for a summer spent chewing sunflowers seeds at the ballpark, talking to local athletes and generally enjoying small-town, New England life. I’ll be writing sports for Northampton, Massachusetts’ Daily Hampshire Gazette newspaper.
I’m looking forward to the experience and the opportunity to develop my skills. Not only that, but I’ll be given the chance to explore copy editing and layout, two important journalistic elements that I haven’t had the chance to learn yet. My internship coordinator is keen on giving me both guidance and the liberty to explore my potential; I’m glad that my first internship is shaping up to be so involved, not merely making photocopies and fetching coffee.
All this to say that I will be posting all extra material I get from my summer in the US right here. My official articles will be found on the Gazette’s website, although I’m not sure if a membership fee applies in order to read the full pieces. I’ll find out and let everyone know. Also, I hope to be a regular contributor to a local Northampton blog – its goal is to inform local community members and visitors to the area of important issues and events happening in Western Massachusetts.
My internship begins on June 30th, and I hope to be able to produce articles, and editorialize on this blog soon thereafter. So here’s to summer nights in a small Massachusetts community, and the possibilities that will ensue!
